Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a neuro motor speech disorder where children have difficulty making the precise and coordinated movements necessary to speak, despite their brain sending the correct signals to their mouth. It typically does not involve muscle weakness. Children with CAS struggle with planning and executing the rapid movements required to form sounds, syllables, words, and sentences (motor planning).

Symptoms

Not every child with CAS is alike. Your child might show some or all of these signs. If your child is over 3 years old and:

  • Doesn’t say words the same way every time.
  • Changes or mixes up sounds.
  • Often puts stress on the wrong syllable or word.
  • Says shorter words more clearly than longer ones

Causes

Most of the time the causes of Childhood Apraxia of Speech are unclear. Sometimes, it can be linked to brain damage, which might stem from a genetic condition or syndrome, or it could result from a stroke or a serious head injury.

See a professional !

An SLP can assess your child’s speech and language abilities. Many children who struggle with speech sounds may also have difficulties with language.

To diagnose CAS, the SLP will evaluate your child’s oral motor skills, speech melody (intonation), and their ability to articulate different sounds. Specifically, the SLP will:

  • Assess how well your child pronounces speech sounds individually and in combinations within syllables or words.
  • Evaluate how understandable your child’s speech is to others
